Offering this new 5-Forward-speed-plus-Neutral-&-Reverse MST 200-Series transaxle to replace 915-012, -012A & -012B transaxles originally used on Deere STX 38 riders. If you need a 915-012, this may be your only option -- the 915-012s became obsolete from Peerless, and were replaced by the 930-004A (Deere P/N AM 108833) plus the AM119052 Changeover Kit that is now obsolete from Deere (individual kit component parts are still available online). Peerless engineered the MST 200-Series transaxles to replace most of the 930-Series, so this will be a direct replacement for the 930-004 transaxles.
It will also replace the 920-017 transaxle, and is a bolt-in replacement for the 920-017, except for NOTE 7 below.
NOTE: This MST 200-Series transaxle is not a bolt-in replacement for the 915-012s. Although there are some similarities between the 915 and this MST, you will need to make some modifications to the drive system to get it to work (that is what the now-obsolete Changeover Kit was for). These similarities and differences are:
1. The 915s and MST 200s both use the same axle-housing mounting bolt pattern, so the MST will bolt on in place of your 915.
2. The 915-012 input shaft is 1/2" diameter, threaded at the top, with the pulley held on with a nut. The MST 205 input shaft is 5/8" diameter, and uses a snap-ring to hold the pulley on. To use an MST 205, you will need a new pulley with a 5/8"-bore hub. Let me know the diameter of your pulley, and I should be able to supply a new one that will work.
3. The input shaft is about 1/4" farther forward on the MST, so you will also need to re-align your pulley belt guides.
4. The square-top shift shaft on the MST is about 2-1/2" farther forward than the 915, and about 2" closer to the input-shaft centerline, so you will need to modify your shift linkage.
5. The brake lever is about 2-3/4" farther forward on the MST than on the 915, so you will need to shorten your brake linkage.
6. You will probably need to fabricate a new front-corner support strap, as the C-shaped 915 strap might not work with the MST.
7. The MST brake lever is different. Remove the brake lever that comes on the new transaxle and install the one from your 915-012, 920-017, or 930-004. All Peerless brake levers are interchangeable.
8. If your 915-012 uses a 2-terminal neutral-safety switch that screws into the top case cover, this transaxle comes with a switch-ready cover (see Photo 1), but the switch is at the front instead of on the top, as on the 915. Simply unscrew and re-use your switch, or I have a new one, if needed.
Included with this transaxle for 915-012 replacements will be an Illustrated Parts List of the obsolete AM119052 Changeover Kit. Even though the complete Kit is obsolete from Deere, many of the individual component parts are still available, and complete Kits can still be found online.
This new-replacement transaxle has the full factory warranty. It is factory-lubricated, ready to bolt-in and run.
This in-line-shift, gear-drive, new-in-box 5-speed MST 200-Series Peerless transaxle has a 5/8"-diameter x 1-3/16"-tall input shaft with keyway and snap-ring groove, 3/4"-diameter axle shafts with keyways and snap-ring grooves on the ends, and the short, square-top shift shaft as shown. The overall end-to-end axle length is approximately 28-7/8"; the axle ends extend out from the case approximately 4-5/8" on each side. The axles are supported by needle bearings at the ends of the axle housings, inside the case. The case has two sets of industry-standard mounting holes -- the close-together holes are on 13" side-to-side centers x 1-3/4" front-to-back centers; the far-apart mount holes are on 16-1/4" x 2-1/2" centers. It also includes a complete new brake assembly.
Being new, this transaxle is covered by the Peerless 2-year Consumer Use/90-day Commercial Use/30-day Rental Use Limited Warranty within the USA and the 1-year Consumer/90-day Commercial/30-day Rental Limited Warranty outside the USA. A dated receipt will be provided to validate the warranty, dated to reflect its arrival at your place so you won't lose warranty coverage for travel time. Note that the warranty covers defects in material and workmanship -- it is not a blanket guarantee against abuse and mistreatment. A copy of the Peerless Warranty will also be included with the transaxle.
MOUNTING NOTE: The holes on the lower-front corners of the transaxle are not threaded, since the mower manufacturer uses 5/16"-18 self-threading bolts to hold the front support(s) to these corners. If you are re-using your original bolts or equivalent OEM bolts, make sure they have clean threads when re-installing these supports. If you do not have the original-style bolts and are using standard machine-thread bolts for these front-corner supports, you will need to carefully tap these holes to match the threads of your bolts. WARNING: If you plan on pre-tapping these holes, the case material is only about 0.060" (1/16") thick at the back of these holes, so measure the hole depth and set your tap accordingly, or you will break through the case into the gear-lube area.
For the technically-minded Buyer, the Forward-shift gear ratios for this 5-speed MST 200-Series transaxle are: 1st) 2.64:1; 2nd) 1.30:1; 3rd) 0.90:1; 4th) 0.67:1; and 5th) 0.60:1. Input-pinion ratio is 2.31:1, and final-drive ratio is 9.89:1. Reverse is 2.08:1. These ratios may be slightly faster than the original 915, 920, or 930 speeds.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE THIS 'A'-Input TRANSAXLE AS-IS ON A REAR-ENGINE RIDER (where the transaxle is mounted with the input pulley, brake and shift arm BEHIND the axle) or you will have 1 forward speed and 5 reverse speeds.
QUESTIONS? Please -- before you ask a "Will-it-fit?" question -- compare the measurements of your transaxle to the dimensions I have listed above for this transaxle, and note the Model and Serial Numbers off your current transaxle. Yes, that may require safely jacking up your mower, removing a wheel, then crawling under the mower with a scale, tape measure, flashlight and notepad, as well as a rag to carefully clean off dirt and grease. In your "Question," also include the Model and Serial Number off the mower. Thanks!
